That’s where a Speaking Engagement Agreement comes into play for you!

Speaking Engagement Agreement, sometimes called a Speaker Agreement, is a document where two parties come together to form a contract for speaking services at an event (even a virtual one!). One party is called the speaker (the party who is doing the actual speaking) and the other party is called the event host (the one who is hosting the event where the speaker will be). Speaking Engagement Agreements are very common for both big and small events. You should be using them for ALL of your events! These types of agreements can be used for a speaker giving a speech at a large event, like a conference, or even for a speaker giving a talk at a small event, like a meeting of just a few people.

Speaking Engagement Agreements are necessary when the two parties are getting together for speaking services, because these agreements help outline the most important terms of the parties' relationship. Remember, don’t tell me what they ‘said’, tell me what you have in writing!

Many speakers operate as independent businesses and due to the popularity of hiring different speakers at different events based on subject-matter expertise, most speakers work entirely as their own entities, making a living speaking at various events. The speaking engagement can cover any topic area.

In an agreement like the ones I’ve written for you to use, standard contractual clauses are also included, such as choice of law and venue.

 How to use these documents

These documents can be used in any scenario in which a speaker and event host would like to begin their relationship. It can be used by either party - in other words, for an event host or venue looking for a standard template for speakers invited there, this would be a good fit. The size of the engagement doesn't matter; this agreement can be used for both small and large functions.

In these documents, basic identifying information about the parties will be entered, such as names and address details. Then, details about the actual speaking services and event are included. This information includes fees, the details of the event such as date, time, and venue, and of course, what the speaker will be talking about.

After the document is filled out, it should be printed so that both parties can sign it. Then, a best practice is for both parties to keep a copy.

Speaking Engagement Agreements are normally subject to individual state laws, governing general and commercial contract principles.
